Bentley Appoints T. Jon Mayer as New Head of Exterior Design

Bentley Motors has appointed T. Jon Mayer as its new Head of Exterior Design and Design Operations, strengthening the British luxury marque’s design leadership as it prepares for a new generation of vehicles and an increasingly electrified future.
Effective immediately, Mayer expands his responsibilities from his previous position as Head of UX Design and Design Operations to take leadership of Bentley’s Exterior Design team. The appointment places him at the centre of defining the visual direction of Bentley’s production cars, concept vehicles and future exterior design language.
Mayer succeeds Domen Rucigaj, who has moved into a new position within the Volkswagen Group.
Shaping Bentley’s Next Generation
The appointment comes at an important period for Bentley as the company continues to evolve its approach to modern luxury.
Mayer will now oversee the exterior design direction of future Bentley vehicles, giving him significant influence over how the brand translates its long-established identity into a new era.
Bentley’s cars have traditionally been recognised through distinctive design elements including powerful proportions, sculpted bodywork and a strong road presence. However, electrification and rapidly changing automotive technology are creating new opportunities for designers.
Electric vehicle architecture can influence everything from vehicle proportions to aerodynamics, packaging and front-end design. Bentley’s challenge will be to embrace these opportunities while ensuring future models remain immediately recognisable as Bentleys.
Mayer’s expanded role therefore extends beyond creating individual models. His work will contribute to establishing a consistent design language that can carry Bentley through its next phase.
From Digital Experience to Exterior Design
Mayer’s previous responsibilities within UX Design are particularly relevant as luxury automotive design becomes increasingly integrated with technology.
Today’s premium vehicle experience extends far beyond traditional craftsmanship. Customers expect sophisticated digital interfaces, connectivity and technology to coexist naturally with high-quality materials and distinctive exterior styling.
By bringing experience in UX and design operations into his expanded position, Mayer can potentially help Bentley create a more cohesive relationship between the way its cars look and the way customers interact with them.
His new responsibilities will cover production vehicles, concept cars and Bentley’s future exterior design direction.
Progressive Luxury Meets Electrification
Bentley has made clear that the appointment supports its commitment to progressive luxury design and its future electrified product portfolio.
This represents one of the most important transformations in the company’s modern history.
For a marque associated with powerful grand tourers and luxury performance cars, electrification requires more than simply replacing an internal-combustion engine with an electric powertrain. The vehicles must continue to deliver the presence, craftsmanship and exclusivity Bentley customers expect.
Design will play a critical role in communicating that transition.
Future Bentley models will need to combine aerodynamic efficiency and new technology with the visual drama expected from one of Britain’s most prestigious automotive brands.
A New Chapter for Bentley Design
Leadership changes within automotive design departments can have an impact that lasts for years because today’s sketches and concepts eventually become tomorrow’s production cars.
Mayer’s appointment therefore offers an early indication of the team that will shape Bentley’s next design chapter.
As the marque expands its electrified portfolio, enthusiasts will be watching closely to see how familiar Bentley characteristics evolve across upcoming production cars and concepts.
For T. Jon Mayer, the task is clear: take Bentley’s unmistakable design identity forward without losing the character that made it distinctive in the first place.
