BMW Breaks the Charging Barrier
BMW's new electric iX5 demonstrates charging power of up to 460 kW, highlighting technology that could transform long-distance electric driving.

BMW has taken another significant step in electric vehicle development, demonstrating the ultra-fast charging capabilities of its upcoming iX5 electric SUV during a technology event in California.
Working with charging network IONNA and equipment manufacturer Alpitronic, the German luxury automaker demonstrated charging power of approximately 460 kW, with reports indicating a peak of 464 kW.
The October 20 demonstration offered an early look at how next-generation battery technology could reduce one of the most significant inconveniences associated with electric vehicles: lengthy charging stops.
Up to 350 KM in Just 10 Minutes
One of the most impressive figures involves the amount of driving range the BMW iX5 can recover during a short charging session.
According to BMW, the iX5 60 xDrive can add up to approximately 350 kilometres of WLTP-rated range in just ten minutes under suitable charging conditions.
The vehicle’s large 141 kWh usable battery can also charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes.
These figures represent a considerable technological achievement for a large premium SUV.
However, charging performance depends on battery temperature, state of charge, charging equipment and operating conditions.
Importantly, the demonstration used specialised equipment that was not commercially available at public US charging stations at the time of the test.
The iX5 benefits from BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, incorporating an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture.
Compared with earlier BMW electric systems, the new architecture supports greater charging efficiency and improved energy management.
Its cylindrical battery cells are designed to increase energy density while supporting the demanding power requirements of ultra-fast charging.
The technology forms part of BMW’s broader electrification strategy, previously explored in CarBook’s BMW Neue Klasse feature.
Why This Matters for UAE Drivers
For motorists in the UAE, charging speed could become increasingly important as electric SUVs gain popularity.
Long-distance journeys between Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other Emirates require vehicles capable of combining generous range with convenient charging.
An electric SUV that can recover hundreds of kilometres of driving range during a short stop could make electric ownership more practical for drivers who regularly travel between cities.
Nevertheless, achieving BMW’s demonstrated charging figures would require suitably powerful public charging infrastructure.
As highlighted in CarBook’s Automotive Trends Defining 2026, charging infrastructure, battery technology and intelligent energy management are becoming central to the industry’s development.
Electric SUVs Enter a New Era
BMW is not alone in pursuing faster charging.
Premium manufacturers are increasingly introducing higher-voltage architectures, improved battery cooling and more sophisticated charging software.
CarBook recently covered the new BMW iX4, another example of how the German manufacturer is expanding its next-generation electric portfolio.
The iX5 takes that ambition into the large luxury SUV segment.
For BMW, the challenge is no longer simply producing an electric vehicle with impressive performance or a large battery. The objective is to make electric driving more convenient without sacrificing the comfort and capability expected from a premium SUV.
